Overview

Seasonal influenza, commonly called the flu, is a contagious respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. It mainly affects the nose, throat and lungs and can affect people of all ages.

For many people, influenza causes several days of fever, cough, body aches and tiredness followed by an uncomplicated recovery. For others, particularly young children, older adults, pregnant women and people with certain underlying medical conditions, influenza can lead to more serious illness or complications.

With schools, nurseries, workplaces and families spending considerable time together indoors, influenza in Dubai can spread quickly when seasonal flu activity increases. The UAE's National Seasonal Flu Awareness Campaign 2026–2027 runs from September 2026 through March 2027, with vaccination and prevention forming important parts of the country's seasonal influenza awareness programme.

Knowing the symptoms of influenza, how it spreads, who is at greater risk and when to seek medical care can help families make informed decisions during the flu season in Dubai and the UAE.
